The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, engaged in discussions with the Ambassadors of Cuba and Mexico to Nigeria, focusing on potential partnerships in health and investment opportunities within the FCT.
During the meeting with Cuban Ambassador Miriam Morales Palmero, Minister Wike expressed Nigeria’s interest in harnessing Cuba’s medical advancements, particularly in the development of anti-malarial drugs.
Ambassador Palmero highlighted Labiofam, a Cuban pharmaceutical company, which has successfully created a single anti-malarial dose with applications for other diseases. She revealed that Nigeria had signed an agreement with the company in 2016 as part of the country’s efforts to combat malaria. Additionally, Palmero discussed potential collaborations in agriculture, tourism, and job creation, with Cuban investors expressing interest in partnering with the FCT administration.
In a parallel meeting with Mexican Ambassador Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, Minister Wike informed him of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to streamline bureaucratic processes hindering investments in Nigeria. Wike emphasized the desire for tangible actions that would contribute to the country’s economic development.
Ambassador Ortiz assured Wike that Mexican investors would eagerly bring their agricultural expertise to Nigeria once an enabling environment was established. He underscored the shared characteristics of the two countries, including their multicultural populations and federal political systems. Ortiz highlighted the potential for mutual benefits through leveraging these similarities.
Wike expressed his eagerness to move beyond Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and witness concrete actions that would bring tangible benefits to Nigeria. The discussions with both ambassadors indicate a keen interest in exploring collaborations that extend beyond health advancements to encompass economic development and investment opportunities between Nigeria and these nations.
