WestJet Group has cancelled around 40 flights in anticipation of a strike by its aircraft maintenance workers.
The airline said about 6,500 travellers are affected by the decision which covers Tuesday and Wednesday flights. WestJet also said it began cancelling and consolidating its flights in a bid to park aircraft in a safe and organized way.
Some 670 WestJet mechanics which are represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association are confident of walking off the job as early as Thursday night after giving the airline strike notice earlier this week.
The flight cancellations happened as WestJet wait for a response to its demand that the Canadian Industrial Relations Board intervene.
The airline said if the demand is accepted, the dispute will be referred to arbitration and prevent labour action by both sides,
The union, whose members voted overwhelmingly to reject a tentative agreement recently, is against the move.
