Toronto plans to open four warming centres today ahead of a run of bitter cold.
As expected, the temperature will hover around the freezing mark for most part of the day but Environment Canada has warned of an overnight low of – 5 C that will be closer to -10 with the wind chill.
The winter conditions are expected to continue with the possibility of around five centimetres of snowfall with wind gusts of around 40 kilometres an hour and a daytime high of – 3 C.
Sunny skies but much colder conditions are expected this weekend.
Environment Canada forecasts a high of -8 C on Saturday with an overnight low of -17 C.
The temperature will range between -9 C and – 12 C on Sunday.
Environment Canada added that there would be a risk of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone who goes out this weekend for a long period without “adequate protection.”
The Toronto-run warming centres offer a place for the vulnerable to escape the elements and open anytime the temperature goes below – 5 C.
There is another surge site that opens only when temperatures goes below – 15 C.
The locations opening at 5 p.m. are listed below:
- 136 Spadina Rd.
- 885 Scarborough Golf Club Rd
- 81 Elizabeth St.
