Halifax is mourning the loss of a sports broadcasting legend as Alex J. Walling, a prominent figure in Atlantic Canada’s media landscape, has passed away at the age of 77. Walling, a Quebec City native, left an indelible mark on the region through his extensive career in radio and television.
Walling relocated to Halifax in the early 1970s, quickly becoming a familiar and respected voice in the local sports scene. His contributions to CHNS Radio included covering the historic Canada-Russia Summit Series in September 1972. Notably, he was one of only two journalists granted post-game access to Paul Henderson after his iconic game-winning goal in the eighth and final match in Moscow.
For nine years, Walling served as TSN’s Maritime correspondent, showcasing his expertise in sports journalism. His regular column, ‘A.J.’s Atlantic,’ on TSN.ca further solidified his reputation as a knowledgeable and insightful commentator.
During his tenure with TSN’s Atlantic bureau from 1991 to 2000, Walling covered a diverse range of events for the network, including university sports, junior hockey, curling, and the Canada Winter Games. His dedication to sports journalism extended beyond broadcasting, as he also owned and operated the Atlantic Media Institute for 12 years. In 2008, he made a significant contribution to the media landscape by founding CJQC radio in Liverpool, N.S.
Walling’s legacy is characterized not only by his professional achievements but also by his commitment to fostering sports journalism in the Atlantic region. His impact on the community and his invaluable contributions to the world of sports broadcasting will be remembered and celebrated by colleagues, fans, and the wider Halifax community.
