Donald Trump’s company was fined $1.6 million Friday as punishment for a scheme in which the former president’s top executives dodged personal income taxes on lavish job perks.
A fine was the only penalty a judge could impose on the Trump Organization for its conviction last month for 17 tax crimes, including conspiracy and falsifying business records.
Judge Juan Manuel Merchan imposed the maximum allowed by the law. The former present denied knowing that his executives were illegally evading taxes.

The fine might appear to be a slap on the wrist, but it is a dent in the former president’s campaign to regain the White House.
The former president and his children, who helped run the Trump Organization, were not present in the courtroom for the sentencing.
Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass stated that the fine is “a fraction of the revenue” of the Organization and the infraction was “far-reaching and brazen.”
