A devastating incident unfolded at the Canadian Embassy in Nigeria on November 6 when part of the embassy premises was engulfed in flames, triggered by a power generating plant undergoing repairs.
This unfortunate event claimed the lives of two individuals who were part of the technical crew, while one fortunate person managed to escape unharmed.
According to a source who spoke with Vanguard’s correspondent, the sheer force of the sudden fire explosion resulted in others being forcefully ejected from the powerhouse. Embassy staff fled to safety outside the embassy gates as the fire broke out at approximately 11:30 am. Firefighting trucks swiftly arrived at the scene to combat the flames, while rescue efforts were in progress.

On-the-ground reports revealed that embassy staff sought refuge under trees and other secure locations within the embassy grounds. An ambulance was dispatched to evacuate those affected by the incident.
Confirming the tragic occurrence, Amiola Adebayo, the Head of Operations of the FCT Fire Service, disclosed in a phone interview that two individuals had been fatally injured beyond recognition, and three to four other victims had been urgently transported to hospitals. However, the cause of the fire incident and the nationality of the affected individuals were not immediately clarified.
A security source, reacting to the raging inferno at the High Commission of Canada in Nigeria, described it as an explosion, confirming that two individuals had tragically lost their lives in the incident.
