Nigeria’s apex court has dismissed a lawsuit seeking President Bola Tinubu’s removal.
The suit was filed by Hope Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Ambrose Owuru and it alleged CIA and drug involvement.
The court however imposed a N5 million fine on Owuru.
Owuru petitioned the Supreme Court to remove President Bola Tinubu from office and alleged that Tinubu’s alleged affiliation with the United States Central Intelligence Agency makes him unfit for the presidency.
Also, Our cited Tinubu’s forfeiture of $460,000 to the US government in a drug-related case as reasons for disqualification.
He petitioned the Supreme Court to invoke Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and consequently declared Tinubu unfit to be Nigeria’s President. His prayer was premised on the allegation that President Tinubu is affiliated foreign authorities, thereby compromising his ability to discharge his duties effectively.
Furthermore, in suit number SC/CV/667/2023, Owuru joined former President Muhammadu Buhari as a respondent, stating that his tenure was unconstitutional. As the presidential candidate of the Hope Democratic Party (HDP), a party recently re-registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Owuru stated he was the legitimate victor of the 2019 presidential election.
He alleged that his mandate was usurped by Buhari who governed the country illegally for eight years. He stated that an earlier suit filed before the Supreme Court, seeking the removal of Buhari, was dismissed owing to a scheduling mix-up.
Owuru argued that the technical oversight thwarted justice and perpetuated Buhari’s illegal occupation of the presidency.
He urged the apex court to disqualify President Tinubu, declare him President and order his instant inauguration. This, according to him, would enable him to reclaim his purportedly usurped mandate.
