The threat of strike action by unionized mechanics at WestJet has been put on hold after the two sides agreed to resume talks.
A statement released overnight says WestJet appeared before the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to discuss arbitration alternatives with its Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Tech Ops employees.
Officials of CIRB say more information is needed from both sides before making a decision on whether arbitration is the best way to arrive at a first-time collective bargaining agreement.
Meanwhile, both parties have agreed to resume talks and continue to work towards a resolution.
Union members overwhelmingly voted to reject a tentative deal recently and opposed the airline’s request for arbitration.
Recall that the WestJet Group announced the cancellation of over 30 flights that were scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday due to Thursday evening’s possible strike by its aircraft maintenance workers.
