The City of Prince Rupert, in British Columbia, has declared a state of local emergency over the escalation of water main and water service breaks in the past week.
According to Mayor Herb Pond, in the past week, six water mains have burst and several water service lines have burst as well.
Pond said: “We don’t want to alarm the community, and are working to manage the situation as best we can to ensure continuity in our water service.

“Calling a state of local emergency allows the city to call in the additional capacity and resources required to manage this situation.”
While talking further, the Mayor said the condition of Prince Rupert’s water distribution system and increasingly colder temperatures are the likely cause of the breaks, which have caused the city millions of dollars in damage.
