In a shocking turn of events, renowned media personalities Patricia and Moses Mawa, founders and principals of Canada’s largest black-owned media organization, have announced their divorce.
The news was shared by Patricia in a heartfelt Facebook post titled ‘Moving Through the Storm‘ on December 31, where she revealed that the couple has been navigating challenging times and has been separated for the past two years.

The couple, who met in Ottawa in 2000 and relocated to Toronto in 2004, had built a media empire together. Their notable ventures include the 24-hour Afroglobal Television, Silvertrust Communications Inc. (also known as Silvertrust Media), and the Transformation Institute For Leadership and Innovation, which undertakes the Transformation Awards.
Patricia, a highly accomplished media executive, serves as the Executive Vice President of Silvertrust Media and Afroglobal Television. She is also the host of the Planet Africa show on OMNI TV and the Associate Publisher of Excellence, Envision, and Destiny Magazines.
The Mawas were given “power couple” status by CNN in 2013, recognizing their significant contributions to the media landscape. Their divorce has sent shockwaves through their social and professional networks.
In the Facebook video, Patricia explained that Moses has moved on with a new partner and daughter. She expressed her well-wishes for Moses and his new family, emphasizing that she has also moved on and is focusing on her thriving career. Notably, Patricia recently released her movie titled “Life Coach”.
Following the divorce, Patricia has reverted to using her maiden name, Bebia.
Reacting to the development in a video posted on his Facebook page, Chief Moses Mawa confirmed the separation and also shared insight on the issue.
In the three-minute video, Moses said “The last five years have been some of the most difficult in my entire life. In 2019, my sister and only sibling was diagnosed with cancer, stage 4 cancer. At the very same time, my marriage to Patricia Babia, reached a breaking point. Mediation, pastoral, and other forms of counseling have not helped.
“In August 2022, while dealing with my sister’s illness, her death and the twelve dependants left under my care, Patricia and I got officially separated despite best efforts. Nothing significant in our 20 years together was a problem. Not financial, nothing extramarital or anything like that. Just irreconcilable differences.
“Now, in our third year of being separated, as Patricia has put it, we have both moved on with varied degrees of outcomes on both sides. And it is time to inform those who may not be aware about what has transpired. I request for privacy as we navigate this new of co-parenting and raising our lovely children. Special thanks to our family and friends for the support during this very difficult time of growth and healing from the trauma of grief and fracture”.
He continued that “By the Lord’s stripes we were healed, says Isaiah 53: 5. My resolve to build faith family, community, and to make our world a better place remains unwavering. I want what is best for our children and for me, and of course, for Patricia, for whom I wish absolutely nothing but the very best. As Romans 8: 28 says, all things work for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to his purpose.
“My commitment to the Trinity vision of serving God, family, and community, as well as society, remains the same through Silver Trust Media and the subsequent brands that are established, and of course, with roots dating back in 1996 before we got married.”

It’s such a shame to see Patricia and Moses destroy the fame and media empire they worked so hard to build. They were such a wonderful couple full of admiration within the African business community. I wonder what the problem was. Who was this strange woman or man that caused the wahala. Couldn’t it have been better managed.? Non of our African elders could intervene? A beautiful cookie has crumbled. I guess the business will begin to fall apart too as the pillars have collapsed. So sad. I am really shocked
