The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the respected leader of Afenifere and a staunch advocate for true federalism in Nigeria. In a statement signed by prominent leaders from the forum, they described his death as the end of an era, leaving an irreplaceable void in the nation’s political and socio-cultural landscape.
The statement was signed by Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, Leader of SMBLF; Senator John Mbata, President General of Ohaneze; Ambassador Dr. Godknows Igali, President General of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF); Dr. Pogu Bitrus, President of the Middle Belt Forum; and Chief John Nnia Nwodo, Coordinator of SMBLF.
The forum extended condolences to Adebanjo’s immediate family, the Yoruba nation, and Nigeria at large, emphasizing that his life exemplified integrity, justice, and an unwavering commitment to democratic principles. They noted his enduring dedication to national development and his advocacy for equity, fairness, and good governance.
The statement highlighted Adebanjo’s role in Nigeria’s political evolution, from his early days as a disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo to his steadfast support for restructuring and national unity. His leadership, the forum noted, was defined by his firm belief in true federalism as the foundation for Nigeria’s progress.
One of the key moments underscored in the statement was Adebanjo’s vocal support for the Southeast’s claim to the presidency in the 2023 elections. Despite a Yoruba candidate being in the race, he argued that the Igbo deserved their turn in the spirit of fairness and national cohesion. The forum commended his courage in standing by his convictions, describing him as a selfless leader who prioritized justice over regional interests.
The SMBLF also acknowledged Adebanjo’s contributions as a mentor and statesman, noting that his counsel was invaluable in shaping the forum’s stance on national issues. His absence, they said, would be deeply felt, as his voice was one of reason, courage, and foresight.
Born in 1928, Adebanjo’s political journey spanned Nigeria’s struggle for independence, opposition to military rule, and the fight for a just democratic system. He endured persecution and detentions but remained unwavering in his advocacy for democratic ideals.
Concluding the statement, the SMBLF prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for his family and the nation to bear the loss. They affirmed that his legacy would continue to serve as a guiding light for future generations.
