Saudi Arabia has revealed that the kingdom executed no fewer than six Iranian men for drug smuggling, triggering strong criticism from Iran at a time when both nations are making effort to mend their relationship.
According to Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry, the six men were caught smuggling hashish into the kingdom and were executed after an appeal was turned down by the country’s Supreme Court. The Ministry did not reveal when the execution happened.
The Ministry said the punishment was in accordance with Islamic law and aimed at protecting citizens and residents “from the scourge of drugs.”
IRNA news agency reported that the Iranian Foreign Ministry in Tehran invited the Saudi ambassador in protest and Iran would send a delegation to Saudi Arabis to deliberate on the case.
IRNA quoted ministry official Mojtaba Shasti Karimi as saying that the executions are not in line with the general trend of judicial cooperation. He added that the execution, which took place without informing Iran, was “not acceptable under any circumstance.”
