Pelosi: House will proceed to impeach Trump

Nancy Pelosi wins re-election as US House Speaker

United States House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi has said she would forge ahead with efforts to impeach President Donald Trump during the last days of his administration after his supporters violently attacked on the Capitol.

Pelosi said there would soon be a resolution in the House of Representatives calling for the cabinet’s removal of Trump as not fit for office under the constitution’s 25th amendment.

She said if Vice President Mike Pence does not agree, “we will proceed with bringing impeachment legislation” to the floor of the House of Representatives.

“In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this President represents an imminent threat to both.

“As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.”

It should be recalled that Trump had once been impeached by the Democratic-dominated House in December 2019 for putting pressuring on Ukraine’s leader to tarnish the political image of Joe Biden but Trump was acquitted by the Republican-majority Senate.

Although time is almost gone, Democrats should have the votes in the House to impeach Trump again and they could even get the support of some Republicans for the move.‌

But it is unlikely they muster the needed two-thirds majority to convict Trump in the 100-member Senate and oust him from office.

Trump’s successor Joe Biden will be inaugurated on January 20.
