Nigerian Government revokes licence of Raypower, AIT, Silverbird, Rhythm, and others over failure to meet renewal requirements

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has announced that the licences of Raypower, AIT, Silverbird TV, Raypower FM, Rhythm FM and others have been revoked over alleged failure to meet renewal requirements.

Also, the commission has ordered its state offices to work with security agencies in their various locations to instantly shut down operations of the broadcasting stations.

It is speculated that the revocation may not be unconnected with efforts by the government to cripple the wings of the affected stations and in turn control the Nigerian media space.

This is so as some of the broadcasting stations affected are owned by opposition politicians, and have been criticizing the government.

NBC said the stations affected had their broadcast licenses revoked over failure to renew them for a total of N2.66 billion.

According to a statement issued by the Director-General of NBC, Balarabe Ilelah, recently, the decision was made after the list of stations that had not yet renewed their licenses was publicized.

The Commission said they were given a two-week waiver to renew their licenses in May, after which they exercised the option of having their broadcast licenses revoked.

The Director-General further ordered the stations affected to shut down in the next 24 hours, while directing NBC offices nationwide to liaise with the security agencies to ensure immediate compliance.

He said: ”Three months after the publication, some licensees are yet to pay their outstanding debts, in contravention of the NBC Act CAP N11, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, particularly section 10 (a) of the third schedule of the Act.

“In view of this development, the continued operation of the debtor stations is illegal and constitutes a threat to national security.

”Therefore, after due consideration, the NBC hereby announces the revocation of the licenses of the under-listed stations and give them 24 hours to shut down their operations.”
