General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the leader of the Niger junta that took over the Nigerien government, has stated that the military takeover in his country prevented an imminent disaster from happening in Nigeria.
Islamic scholars that met with President Bola Tinubu at the presidential villa in Abuja recently also met with Tchiani in Niamey.

According to Sheik Bala Lau, Chairman of Jam’atul Izalatu Bida Waikamatu Sunnah, Tchiani revealed that the coup was well intended, adding that “they struck to starve off an imminent threat that would have affected not only Niger Republic but also Nigeria”.
It remains unclear what Tchiani meant as the statement was not elaborate.
However, his claim came after the Nigerian Defence Headquarters disclosed that some persons were pressuring the military to seize power in Nigeria.
