The Mayor of South Africa’s Johannesburg, Geoff Makhubo has died. He died of Coronavirus complications.
The spokesperson of Johannesburg, Mlimandlela Ndamase said earlier this month that Makhubo had been hospitalised for Covid-19 complications after he tested positive in late June.
However, he succumbed to the infection recently at the age of 53. After his death was announced, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development Eunice Mgcina was been appointed as acting Mayor of Johannesburg.
In her tribute to the late Mayor, Mgcina said: “We had hoped that Makubo would defeat the virus, return to work and lead the City as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades. The family has requested to be afforded privacy and space as they process the untimely passing of one of their own.”
Geoff Makhubo assumed office in December 2019 after the ruling party snatched the city’s Mayoral from an opposition coalition.
