In a powerful exhibition of unity and protest against racism, the teams that are taking part in Manitoba’s youth provincial soccer championships have been taking a knee after a player was targeted with racial slurs during a recent match. Evelyne Kiwanuka, the mother of the affected player, said that the gesture of solidarity was encouraging, and it shows a glimmer of hope that children are not getting affected by the hurtful incident.

The protest went on at Winnipeg’s Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex, where AK Academy players and their opponents kneeled before the commencement of their round-robin game in the boys’ 17-and-under division of the MSA Cup.

During the association game between AK Academy and 1v1 Futbol Dreams, a disturbing incident happened where Kiwanuka’s 16-year-old son was targeted with racial slurs by opponents. A physical altercation ensued after the racial slurs, with players of both teams getting involved. The incident left Kiwanuka’s son and another AK Academy player assaulted by players from the opposing team. While reacting to this sad event, AK Academy decided to take a knee to display solidarity and protest against racism during their upcoming games.

Evelyne Kiwanuka, the mother of the player targeted by racial slurs, was sad and distressed when she learnt about the incident. But she finds hope in the show of support and solidarity displayed by teams taking a knee in protest. The act of kneeling indicates that the impact of racism is being realized and that players are uniting against such hurtful behavior.
