House of Commons of Canada has passed legislation that calls for classification of the far-right Proud Boys group as a terrorist organization.
The legislation was passed the legislature’s lower chamber by a margin that was unanimous recently.
According to Global News, the motion tasks the government of Canada to “use all available tools to address the proliferation of white supremacists and hate groups starting with the immediately designating the Proud Boys as a terrorist entity.”
Reports have it that the motion was introduced by Member of Parliament, Jagmeet Singh, who doubles as the head of the country’s New Democratic Party (NPD), which has pushed for the designation recently.
As things stand, the motion awaits consideration from Ottawa leadership, which has the final say as far as the matter is concerned.
While marking the legislation’s passage, Singh appealed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to back the measure and told his followers to get “the pressure on.”
The Proud Boys is an extreme-right group that has been under heavy scrutiny in recent years and is well known for its ties to protests that are violent in the country.
