Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has revealed that he is “calling a timeout” in the Canada Post strike, urging the Canada Industrial Relations Board to send about 55,000 employees back to work.
Mackinnon stated that the Crown corporation and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers are at an impasse after almost one month of strike, and negotiations are going in the wrong direction.
He added that if the board agrees the two sides have reached no agreement, it has been asked to order union members to get back to work until May.
The federal government is creating an inquiry to determine why both sides cannot agree.
Mackinnon says Canadians have suffered greatly as a result of the strike.
He added that he’s asked the board to decide quickly and hopes the mail will be delivered again from next week.
