Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has dismissed his Prime Minister, Patrick Achi, and has announced plans for the formation of a new government. This decision comes two years ahead of the scheduled presidential elections.
President Ouattara formalized the move by signing a decree that effectively terminated the roles of the Prime Minister and all government members. The announcement was conveyed through a statement read by the Presidential Secretary-General, Abdourahmane Cisse.
In acknowledging the contributions of Prime Minister Patrick Achi and his government, President Ouattara expressed gratitude for their dedicated service to the nation over the past years.
This decision had been anticipated in recent days, following the President’s notification to government members about an impending reshuffle during their last cabinet meeting on September 28.
Patrick Achi assumed the position of Prime Minister in March 2021, following the unfortunate passing of his predecessor, Hamed Bakayoko, due to cancer. Bakayoko, in turn, had succeeded Amadou Gon Coulibaly, who had passed away unexpectedly the previous year.
It is noteworthy that Patrick Achi had briefly resigned from his post in April 2022 before being swiftly reappointed during a reshuffle. He recently secured a substantial victory in local elections in his southern region, Me, winning 60 percent of municipalities and 80 percent of the regions. As a result, the ruling Rally of Houphouetists for Democracy and Peace party (RHDP) is currently the frontrunner for the 2025 elections.
President Ouattara, however, has not yet made an official announcement regarding his candidacy for a fourth term in office, leaving the political landscape in Ivory Coast with some uncertainty.
