‘I don tell my people to start listening to radio now cos this DSTV new price is not for me’- Nigerians react as MultiChoice increase prices of GOtv, DStv packages

MultiChoice Nigeria, a satellite TV provider, has announced an increase in the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages through a recent text message to its subscribers. The increase is in response to Nigeria’s rising inflation.

In an internal memo, the company said: “Due to the various economic challenges impacting our business operations, we have had to review the price of our packages to continue delighting our customers with great entertainment, anytime and anywhere.”

According to the company, the new prices for MultiChoice Nigeria’s DStv and GOtv packages will be effective from May 1, 2023. The DStv Premium package will be increased by ₦3,500 or 16.7%, going from ₦21,000 to ₦24,500. The DStv Compact+ package will be increased by ₦2,350 or 16.5%, going from ₦14,250 to ₦16,600.

In the same vein, the DStv Compact package will be increased from N9,000 to ₦10,500, a ₦1,500 or 16.7% increase. The DStv Confam package will see a 17% increment from ₦5,300 to ₦6,200. The DStv Yanga package will increase from ₦2,950 to ₦3,500, equivalent to 18.6% while the DStv Padi package will increase from ₦2,150 to ₦2,500.

The price increase has generated mixed reactions among subscribers on social media. Check out some of the reactions below:

@EngrMartell tweeted: “Sigh, if I could just find a reliable place to watch live matches, I would gladly rid myself of dstv and their incessant price hikes.”

Charlieee tweeted: “Even if dstv increases their price by 100%, we will still pay it after complaining and ranting. Monopoly is a bad thing.”

@joyebwejua tweeted: ” @DStvNg @DStv why is the hike in subscription price just for Nigerians?

@ultimatekombo tweeted: “I think it is time we get an alternative to DSTV this is becoming too much. Due to no competition they just keep increasing their subscription price and we can’t even do anything.”

@lordjclub tweeted: “Omo, I don tell my people to start listening to radio now cos this DSTV new price is not for me.”

@KODUSOLE tweeted: “DSTV price hike to me is just a distraction. It’s high time their subscribers enjoyed pay as you go. What’s the essence of paying thousands with the epileptic power supply in Nigeria coupled with high cost of maintaining generator.”

@PastorMarvy tweeted: “With these incessant price hikes, DSTV is on its way to becoming the status symbol it once was!”

@lollypeezle tweeted: “Can we all just agree to boycott Multichoice and their products (DSTV and GOTV)? The increment in tariffs is getting too much. After every market day, they increase price while showing same movie over and over and over again till you know the next scene word for word. Can we?”

@the_smallie tweeted: “DSTV wants to increase their subscription price by 17% How many Channels we dey watch sef?”

@OjiUgo_Nwa tweeted: “Why can’t we just choose the stations to pay for? If not for football, Dstv is useless to me, now they’ve adjusted their price again.”

@f_mjulius tweeted: “I woke up this morning only to see that DSTV is planning to increase price again. Who did we offend in this country? After football, this cable company is literally useless to me & they wants priced us to the teeth. Where is consumer protection agency? Gutted!”

@macgervis tweeted: “@dstv give us pay Per-View. We are tired of monthly sub and tired of price increment.”
