Girl Guides of Canada has asked its members to vote on two new name alternatives for its Brownies program — embers or comets.
Last month, Girl Guides told members it would change the name of the program for girls between seven and eight years because the name has brought harm to racialized Girl Guides.
Girl Guides reveal that some Black Canadians, Indigenous residents and people of colour have decided to skip this program or stall joining the organization due to the name and added that a change makes more girls feel like they belong in the program.
Invitations were sent to members to vote for one of the two new name contenders in a recent email sent.

The email reveals the name comets was picked because they inspire as they journey through space, fearlessly blazing a trail, and the name embers was picked because they are small and full of potential that can trigger a powerful flame.
According to Girl Guides, members can vote until December 13 and the selected name will be announced in late January.
