French President Emmanuel Macron has revealed that European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen would travel with him when he embarks on his upcoming trip to China
The visit will take place early next month, during which Macron will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Macron believes that a united voice would be presented to China with von der Leyen’s attendance, while Western leaders are calling on China to pressure Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
Macron has urged China to try and end the year-long invasion of Ukraine by Russia. China has made effort to place itself as a neutral party on the conflict while deepening its ties with Russia.
China published a 12-point position paper requesting peace talks and a “political settlement” to end the conflict in February. However, Macron noted that peace can only be achieved if Russia withdraws its troops.

Macron’s demand for a united front with von der Leyen shows the significance of presenting a strong message to China on this issue. As China keeps increasing its global influence, Western leaders are trying to deepen their ties with the country and encourage it to play a constructive role in ending conflicts around the world.
Also, Macron’s trip to China is an opportunity to deepen economic ties between the two countries. France seeks to increase its exports to China, majorly in the areas of agriculture, food, and wine.
The visit is expected to include talks on the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s massive infrastructure project, and its impact on Europe.
As the world encounters global challenges which include climate change, economic inequality, and political instability. Leaders like Macron and von der Leyen seek to form stronger partnerships with China to tackle these issues.
