Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 561 in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley has issued a 72-hours strike notice and is likely to cease collection of fares starting from Thursday.

The strike notice was served by the union representing transit bus drivers to First Transit, the contracted company that operates BC Transit services in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and the surrounding region.
Local union president Jane Gibbons says its transit operators carry out the same task as those in other regions but still don’t get the same pay.
The union says its members earn 32 percent less than transit workers across the Lower Mainland, without pension plan and long hours of standby time for which they get less than $3 per hour.
