Rashmikant Joshi, a former Leicester Lord Mayor and current City Councillor, has joined the Conservatives after he was deselected by the Labour Party.
Joshi has represented Labour for 18 years and will run as a Tory candidate in the local elections on May 4. He is one of 19 sitting Labour councillors that have been deselected by the party ahead of the election.
This came after the defections of Paul Westley and Hemant Rae Bhatia, who represent Beaumont Leys and were also deselected by Labour, to the Tories.
Joshi disclosed that the Conservatives were the only party that could “bring democracy back to the city.” The Conservative manifesto for Leicester was cited by him as an “excellent example of how we can put local people first, divert funds from the city centre to local communities, and bring jobs back to Leicester.”
The move came ahead of Leicester local elections where every seat on the Labour-run authority will be up for election.
