China’s senior officials have declared a “decisive victory” over COVID-19, claiming the lowest fatality rate in the world.
However, experts have questioned their data as the coronavirus affected the country after it was contained for 3 years.
According to a well-known government scientist, China ended its zero-COVID policy abruptly in early December, with 80% of its 1.4 billion people infected.
Despite widely circulated reports of overcrowded hospital wards and mortuaries, China recorded only about 80,000 COVID deaths in hospitals two months after it lifted its restrictions.
Some experts revealed that the actual death toll was much greater as many patients died at home and doctors were reported to have been discouraged from reporting COVID as the cause of their death.
The Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) of China stated in a recent meeting that “with continuous efforts to optimise COVID-19 prevention and control measures since November 2022, China’s COVID-19 response has made a smooth transition in a relatively short time.”
