The President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza has died at the age of 55 as a result of heart attack.
The President’s sudden death was confirmed by the Government of Burundi through a statement posted on its official twitter page.
The post reads: “The Government of the Republic of Burundi announces with great sadness the unexpected death of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi… following heart failure on June 8, 2020.”

According to the statement, the late President took ill and was taken to Karusi Hospital in Central Burundi for admission on Saturday. His condition initially improved but he had a cardiac arrest on Monday and efforts to revive him yielded no result.
Pierre Nkurunziza became the President of Burundi in 2005 and was due to hand over in August to Evariste Ndayishimiye, the winner of the May 20 presidential election.
