A one-month-old baby boy has died from injuries he sustained after being kidnapped from his mother’s arms by a troop of monkeys in Mwamgongo village in Kigoma, northeastern Tanzania.
The mother, Shayima Said, was breastfeeding her baby Luhaiba outside their house in the Mwamgongo village recently when a group of monkeys showed up, snatched Luhaiba, and attempted to run away with him.
While talking about the ugly incident, Kigoma Regional Police Commander James Manyama said: “She screamed for help and villagers rushed to her house to assist her in getting her child…back from the troop of monkeys.

“The villagers had to use force against the monkeys to get back the baby. In the process, the baby got injured on the head and the neck.”
After the baby was rescued, he was rushed to a nearby hospital but he died while receiving treatment. The type of monkey involved in the attack remains unknown but many believe that the group came from Gombe National Park, a game reserve.
Mwamgongo village shares a border with Gombe National Park. Officials have revealed that incidents of animals invading villages are common.
