British-Nigerian heavyweight Anthony Joshua has announced he will undergo minor elbow surgery in May, temporarily pausing his return to the ring as talks of a potential showdown with Tyson Fury continue to swirl.
Joshua has not fought since his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois at Wembley in September 2024, a defeat that cast uncertainty over his future in boxing. Speaking to DAZN on Saturday, the former unified world champion explained the delay in his comeback.
“When do you want me back, people?” Joshua said. “I’m trying to get my body right. I’ve got to have a little surgery on my elbow. A small surgery sometime in May—I’m just finalising the details. That’ll keep me out of the gym for about six to eight weeks. Once I’m healed, I’ll be back.”

Speculation about a long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury continues to build. Fury’s former promoter, Frank Warren, told Mail Sport this week: “It’ll come down to whether Tyson wants it and whether AJ wants it. AJ’s still active and wants the fight—it’s the one that never happened. Everyone wants to see it.”
Warren previously hinted that a long-anticipated “Battle of Britain” between the two heavyweight titans could finally materialize. Despite years of back-and-forth and on-and-off negotiations, a fight between the rivals has yet to be confirmed.
