Alberta’s Health Ministry has stated that discussions have commenced to increase the number of medical residency seats by around 25 percent.
Also, Health Minister Jason Copping has revealed plans to increase the available number of residency training spaces for international medical graduates from 30 to 70.
Copping stated that it would have been better to act sooner because of the current shortage, but noted the best time to start is now.

According to Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn, the Dean of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, this development will create more chances for residents to study in smaller centers.
