The President of Senegal and current Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Macky Sall, recently held a telephone conversation with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin on securing a “lasting ceasefire” in Ukraine.
After the call, Sall tweeted that as President of the AU, he was delighted about his talk with Putin “to press for a lasting ceasefire.”

Also, he welcomed the “listening” and “willingness” of Putin “to maintain dialogue for a negotiated solution to the conflict.”
It should be recalled that the Senegalese President had earlier expressed in the Council of Ministers his concern about the situation in Ukraine while reiterating Senegal’s adherence to the principles of non-alignment and peaceful settlement of disputes.
In a statement issued not long ago, Sall and AU Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, asked Russia and Ukraine to establish an immediate ceasefire and commence political negotiations under the aegis of the United Nations.
Putin however briefed Sall on the military operation of Russia in Ukraine at Sall’s request, emphasizing the humanitarian situation, the Kremlin said in a statement.
According to the statement, Putin made it known that “Russian military personnel take every possible measure to safely evacuate foreign citizens.”
