Moses Effiong, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper and assistant coach of Akwa United Football Club, has died after a prolonged illness in the United States.
Effiong, who celebrated his 65th birthday just three months ago, had been receiving medical treatment abroad. His death was announced on Sunday by the club’s chairman, Paul Bassey.
Bassey described Effiong as “a complete gentleman, core professional football coach, and a wonderful family man who was dedicated and committed to the success of every duty assigned to him.”
Akwa United Football Club said: “The management, staff, and players of Akwa United Football Club regret to announce the sudden demise of our goalkeeper coach, Effiong Moses (MON), who passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in the United States after a long battle with illness.”
Effiong was part of the Nigerian team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. He also played for New Nigerian Bank and was a member of Akwa United’s coaching crew when the team won two FA Cup titles in 2015 and 2017, as well as the NPFL title in 2021.
